Joe,
my responses intertwined below
worst case where the screw is worn to only 1/2 thread height:
| |
__ | __ __ |
/__\ __ Where the threads are OK |__// \\__// \\__|
/ \__/ \__ the nut will fit like: / \__/ \
This is clearly NOT what we want.
IMO, Cast the nut in one piece over the best part of the screw, and
THEN split it. (Slitting saw)
Is it heresy to suggest that the ends of the screw is usually least
worn and you could even slit INTO THE SCREW to release the nut?! On
some machines, these "end" threads are NEVER used!
You could even use the screw as a mandrel to turn the "nut" into a
cylinder, and cut grooves for circlips(to provide the springy-ness
you spoke of). THEN to the slitting saw, and, voila!! Drill a hole
in the nut for a pin to prevent rotation of the nut(in its' housing).
You may only need ONE slit. Techno-Isel ballnuts are made on this
theory.
