Hugh,
In no particular order:
Look on the shopbot site (for the user forum) or call them Monday.
The x axis could change to thomson or THK rails pretty easily,IMO,
the Carriage(what we would call a gantry) would be tougher. And the Z
even more so. The assembly instructions and programming manual are
online, so you could check this out, BUT...
My advice if you choose to go this way is, build it EXACTLY the way
they say FIRST. USE IT AWHILE, THEN IF it "needs" updatin', you'll be
in a better position to do something intelligent about it. AND, if it
doesn't, you'll have saved your energies for something else. If
you're new at business, believe me you'll be glad for this :-)
As a related aside, MANY of the "homebuilt" aircraft pilots who DIE
every year are people who confuse the ability to BUILD an airplane,
with the ability TO DESIGN an airplane. "I'll just make this a little
wider for my shoulders. Can't make THAT much difference!"
Although CNC is?? less likely to KILL you, the lesson still holds,
IMO.
Next, be careful using a laptop to drive a machine. Be sure you know
what happens with low batteries, etc. and YOUR software/HARDWARE! You
don't want a machine screaming off uncontrollably...
Thank you. Glad to know these long posts are helping somebody :-) As
I said before, I don't type well.
