years ago when I had absolutely no $$$ and no clue what a difficult task
I was setting out on, I investigated making my own nuts and my own ball
screws. Called the manufacturer (who knows who, at this date) and asked
why they were so expensive. After he finished describing the arcane steps of
making the things I was convinced they were cheap at the price.
Uh, did you know they have a specialized RF case hardner that they mount
on a lathe to do the heat treat????
8cP Figure out how long it'll take you, including how long to debug the process
(most of the time, most likely). Divide the price the manufacturer is asking by
what you make at your day job. If time A > time B, buy the item.

Excuse me, I need to go saw down a tree and make some dowels.
