Well since no one "MAKES" linux that is a hard one to tackle. I have used
it for 6 years now.... My servers all have uptimes in excess of 100 days,
most of the time they were rebooted for kernel upgrades which in an ISP
environment are important to maintain security.
You can run DOS programs under linux using a DOS emulator. So yes you
could run GWBASIC if you wanted to.
Just as a little background I run a small California based ISP (Internet
Service Provider) and handle mail for over 4000 of my clients using Linux
as well as web services and other services as well. It says a lot when you
can run the same hardware in an environment as hostile as the Internet (It
is hostile out there) for 6 months or more without ever flipping the power
switch. I would think that Linux has the reliability that I would expect
to run CNC on... as for the RT patches, I have no experience with those,
but Linux in general is extremely robust.
