Hans Wegner's books (3) on backyard blacksmithing and the making of

show how to make a very service-able anvil from rairoad rail. Books
are out of print, libraries have 'em. (good books)
Also, the artist blacksmith list on egroups has talked some about
this subject.
[Weygers' books have been reissued as "The Complete Modern Blacksmith",
which is still in print. I've got a review in the online bookstore on my
site at http://unitedartworks.com I highly recommend it as a hands-on
practical guide to understanding and dealing with ferrous metals using a
minimum of equipment. ]
