Something like a model of a large gun's breach block might have
interrupted threads on three different diameters. Each diameter
could have a different pitch. You shove the block into the
breach and give it 1/3rd turn and it goes home to provide a seal
for firing. That isn't really variable pitch once it is done.
But cutting a tapered thread and changing the pitch a couple
times might result in the desired effect as well as trying to
thread on three different descrete diameters. Just a guess.....
