Joe,

Most likely what you have is a DV-59 lathe. This is one of the units that
is often converted to CNC by bolting on a two axis table. OMNI, UPGRADE and a
few others offer commercial units. In my opinion, this machine would make a
good base for a high end CNC conversion. It is the route I have taken.
Nothing but a bed and a high precision spindle, the carraige and cross could
be sold (they fetch a premium) to help subsidize the conversion.

A stepper based system would not be very fast but could make good sized
parts as the unit most likely has either B&S 21 or 5-C collets. The machine
is most likely not big enough for a turret but a gang tool set up would work
well.
