I've proposed the concept of taking an old
trav-a-dial and using it to directly drive a rotary encoder. Kind of a
new tech approach to the old way of doing things. It should work just
fine, and give you the same accuracy the trav-a-dial had, with a better
view of position. To my knowledge nobody has yet built such a beast,
however.

Does anyone have any thoughts about using these low cost rotary encoders
from Goldmine attached to the TABLE ( or quill ) instead of the SCREWS.
Maybe by some sort of belt or wire driving a pulley with a spring to
keep it all under tension ?
By attaching it to the table, any lash in the driving mechanism would then
be accounted for automatically, similar to using linear encoders.
