Try a workstation install instead. It will take care of all your
partitioning and package selection and leave you at the Xconfigurator part.
Now, I have never tried this with a workstation install, but I have done it
numerous times with the custom install. When you get to a Xconfigurator
window that allows you to choose back do that and then skip the
configuration of the xserver. After that the system should do the LILO
installation. Now when you reboot after logging in as root enter:
Xconfigurator
This will take you into the xserver configuration program and if it gets
botched up you can always just reboot and try something different. Usually
you can recover by opening a new console session (alt + F2 or any other
Fkey) session and doing a:
shutdown -r now

Also, while Linux is installing there is activity going on in the consoles
F2 - F5 in addition to the install stuff you see on console F1. Console F2
is suppose to be a shell prompt, so if you go blank on the screen on console
F1 try doing:
alt + F2
Now you should be at a prompt where you can manually install LILO if need
be.

I did look at the video card compatibility list and the Virage VX is listed
as compatable, but I will warn you that the list is for a newer build of
Xfree than ships on the CD.

Hope this is of some help.
