regardless of what your computer tells you the actual resolution is limited by the screen mask. The.dot pitch will tell you what the actual resolution is on your screen. roughly multiply the dot pitch by 2 then divide that number by the horizontal screen size. This will give you a rough idea of what your monitors maximum resolution is. Other factors that come into play is your physical eyesight although having perfect vision will not compensate for a bad monitor. you also may need to have your monitors focus adjusted by professional technician. Danger high-voltage Do not try to do that yourself unless you have experience with that sort of thing. you might find yourself flying across the room unexpectedly. I myself using 29 in. NEC monitor which will scan most resolutions. even though I use expenses NEC monitor I am still limited on the resolution of the screen.
also 640 X 480 is lowest resolution that Windows will normally handle all icons and text will be extremely large you can adjust the icon size and most of the text size used the screen properties but it will not allow you to adjust everything. Also be aware certain monitors will not scan certain resolutions. If you are using an old version of Windows you may find that you just have garbled mass on the screen and nothing you do will change it. Before changing any resolution read the book that came with your monitor make sure your monitor is compatible with it.
hope this helps
