800x600 is good for monitors down to 14" and a GOOD 14" can
do 1024x768 without frazling your eyes
only the older original VGA monitors would be limited to 640x480
I run my 19" and 21" at 1280x1024
($.02)
you might not want to fit everything on the same screen at once
it would get clutered realy fast that way (look at the EMC GUIs)
a clean simple screen for each mode of operation is easier to use but
could be a bit harder to program
