Texas Instruments announced a USB to serial and parallel port
conversion chip about a month ago. It has an 8052 processor to handle
the port setup and USB conversion. The 8052 has 16K of RAM which can
be loaded by the host PC. If parallel ports really
disappear, could a converter box made with a chip like this get
around the USB motion control problems? There is info at
www.ti.com , search for TUSB5152.
The web site mentions other possible industrial uses such as
monitoring multiple sensor inputs.

PS.
Another use for this chip might be in a pendant controller that can
use USB gamepads or joysticks as input devices. Microsoft and
Logitech gamepads have programmable X,Y,Z,A,B,C buttons along with an
8 way control pad. I have seen these for less than $10 after rebates.
