Actually, I think Jon had this sort of thing in the back of his mind
before I spoke with him about it. I just "pushed him over the edge" from
thinking to doing.

I tend to keep my R&D activities quiet in their early stages, not
because there's any big secret involved, but because to get the support
of a user community to co-develop your idea you have to bring something
really tangible to the table. By way of example, I was testing the EMC
code from NIST for nearly three years before I ever brought up the
subject in a public forum. The reason is that the early versions were
pretty unstable and if you let something like that out before it's true
potential is really evident, people will form their opinions about it
and never come back for a second look. In other words, you only get one
chance to make a good first impression.
