I have to disagree with you on the cost of the home brew stuff.
I built the 3 axis DRO on my mill for less than $200 INCLUDING the used
486DX100 and monitor that I purchased for this purpose. Yes, I got lucky
and was able to get the encoders from Goldmine while they were still
available. Yes the precision is now in the area you desire AND I have
learned a lot while building it. Matter of fact, I am in the process of
building a 2 axis to go on my lathe at this time.
I feel I save a LOT and in the process, have found out how this stuff
works. Education is worth a lot to me, so I guess I have saved a big heap
over having purchased one off the shelf and installed it.
