Dick,

Toroids can be mounted vertically, either with a 'right angle'
support available from most toroidal mfrs, or by mounting to
the 'sidewall' of a chassis; trading height for footprint.

As to the original question, toroids are quiet-er, more efficient,
emit less 'stray' radiation, and generally cost more than a similar
size 'plain' transformer.
