As I said, less volume - but more chassis area. It doesn't matter which way
you mount them, they have a larger "chassis area" and less height. You
could mount a conventional transformer on the side wall of the case if you
so desired.
As for cost, over here a torroidal mains transformer is cheaper than a
conventional open frame transformer of the same VA rating.
