Hi,

Seems this brings us back to the problem associated with DROs - finding a
suitably accurate optical part (scale) at an affordable price... have you
thought where the 'patterned plate' could be obtained?

Could the 'Z' be done with a second mouse innards and plate set at right
angles to the first or I wonder what accuracy could be achieved by pulsing
the laser and using it as a distance measure to the plate (like the
ultrasonic tape measures - flash the laser and see how long it takes for the
light to get back to the sensor)?
