Well if you are using encoders along with the steppers, like Dan's board and
EMC, then you would take the XYZ readings from the encoders so the accuracy
of the lead screw does not matter.

Consider that the movement of the probe will also produce a XY vector from
probe center position. This could be used in several ways by the software.
Firstly it could be used to compensate the encoder reading by the offset
vector. Secondly it could be used for tracing a 2D plane by driving the
steppers to maintain a constant XY offset vector.

The mouse has an existing computer interface which eliminates any external
hardware interface requirement and the movement and clicks can be easily
read by programs.
