I certainly wouldn't use wood. It would wear too rapidly!

A 3" wide steel bar running the length of the ball screw won't even fit in
my machine!
Perhaps a longitudnal strip (cast right into the base) running down the
length fog the machine would do. That migh even work for all three screws.
Maybe somday in the furture I could consider it....if anyone wanted the
feature.

Anti backlash nuts are already built in...even for when using threaded rod.
And the way the anti-backlash nut is designed, it can't "unload with cutting
forces. I'm sure I wohn't have the time to try this right away. Maybe
someone will remind me about it later or try it themselves when they build
one of these machines. If it works though it would definitely be worth
doing!
