I ain't no expert but you are partially right. There is, I believe, a
drive that will do this. You don't get any increased resolution but
you get the smooth operation and less resonance of the microstepping.
You send a signal to take 1 step and it takes 10, 1/10th steps.
Evidently there are applications where this is popular enough to offer
the product for sale.
BUT usually the microstepping drives give you more resolution and you
would change the controller settings accordingly. For instance, now I
am using half step drivers getting 2000 steps per inch. When I
upgrade to a 10x microstepping drive I will have to change my
controller settings to 10000 steps per inch.
The drivers I am referring to are made by Gecko, check out their
website for more detailed and I am sure, accurate information.
