Trim routers and rotozips

on 2001-01-23 10:10:14 UTC
To those contemplating using a trim router or one of those rotozip tools
in a CNC router, you may wish to spend the extra cash and get
a better router. I bought a Sears Craftsman (Ryobi) "professional"
trim router to use for a machine I built. They were not designed for
continious duty use and as such, the bearings wear out quickly. Mine
was made of plastic and the bearing support distorted with use causing
about .125" play in the spindle after just a short time. Being the thrifty
(cheap) person I am, I figured I could shim those bearings up with some
washers and get a couple more months out of it. Got it a touch too tight,
and after about 3 minutes use, melted plastic started oozing out the bottom.

I have learned my lesson, dont skimp on tools. I bought a nice
Bosch electronic variable speed router for about $180.00 and tossed
the $80.00 "professional" melted blob of plastic in the trash.
