(a more detailed answer now that I'm awake)
I picked up one of the "cheaper" cameras ,a Fuji FinePix1400Zoom
a few weeks ago for about $250 base price (shoulda shoped around more)
1280 x 960,1.3MegaPixels ,3X optical zoom ,LCD,USB,4MB SmartMedia card
after playing with it for awhile I'd say these specs would be about
the minimum for casual (but real world) use
you can save a bit by getting one without the zoom (~150-200)
but you'll want it eventually
the resolution is good enough to capture PCB traces & pads on
a 1/3 length ISA card while getting the full card in the frame
so you can mark up and reverse engineer modifications from the
photos for hardware hacking
also good for documenting odd-ball machine/fixture setups etc,etc...
you could check ebay/pawnshops for those surplus xmass gift cameras
people will be selling off ,could get a bargain ;-)
If you want one JUST for web pages then something like the
Kodak EZ200 (~$100) 640x480 combo point-'n'-shoot camera/webcam
should work fine ,I've seen many good'nuff web pages done with just
a B&W quick-cam
