We just had a thread about that a few days ago. I had to
go to belts to get optimum performance for some very good
servo motors I came across at a good price.

You can access the archives to see it- if you can get in!
If not I could e-mail excerpts.

After a talk with Gates I learned that GT-2 is not the best for
precise registration. It is designed more for compatibility with
the older HTD.I am not familiar with HTT.

Gates went through my design on their software and came up with GT 3mm.

GT 3mm pitch 15mm width is good for some several horsepower at high speed
with the right sprockets.

I built the servo right angle gear boxes for my machine.
They use low backlash hardened spiral bevel gears. I cannot say they were
really low cost though... parts were about $300
each. Lots of very precise machining. But the equivalent
"store bought" is a great deal more. I have autocad drawings
and some pictures I think. Surface and cylindrical grinding
capability is required.

I even roughed out a low speed milling spindle design using parts of the
gearbox. Belt drive with angular contact bearings
and ER collet. I have not made it though... I will be starting with a Perske
as well.

Right now I am just trying to get my gantry running. I am just about ready
to bring in the forklift to put the gantry on the base. It weighs about 1000
lb and will be a little scary to
raise up and place.
