I have one each of Taig and Sherline.
The Taig is a more basic lathe than the Sherline, in that it has a
rack-and-pinion carriage drive (on mine, years ago replaced by 1/4-20
allthread leadscrew drive) and has no threading capability.
But it is more sturdily built, has a larger diameter capability and the
accessories tend to be less expensive.
I've never regretted buying mine--new, about 15 years ago. I have a few
3-jaw chucks (one with full-circle jaws) and one of the beefy 4-jaw, the
collet set (probably the cheesiest aspect of the lathe--they're no standard
taper) and the topslide (as well as the obligatory tailstock and a live
center for it). I just made a batch of toolposts so I can keep all my
favorite tools mounted up. Quick-change in a way.
The one major thing I plan to do with mine is drill and ream the spindle
through-hole so that I can put 3/8" material through it.
And, I plan to replace the 1/4-20 carriage drive with the 5/16-20 LH
leadscrew I recently removed from my Sherline mill's Z axis. That way, the
handle cranking versus carriage movement will match the Sherline's (which
also has a LH leadscrew for the carriage).
