Hi,

King Louis X1V of France tried this and it didn't catch on. They went
through a period of about a year during which time was metricated by royal
decree and clocks were made with 10 hour dials and there were 100 minutes in
an hour and 100 seconds in a minute. No one could cope with the change and
they soon reverted to the 'normal' time system (which was first invented by
the Babylonians as far as is known). If you can find any of these metric
clocks they are worth a fortune.
The biggest arguement for all the pre-existing measurement systems is that
they are/were easy to relate to - everyone carried them around with them. A
second is close to a heartbeat, an inch the length from the tip of the thumb
to the first knuckle, a 'hand' (as in horse measurement) 4" the width of the
palm, a foot as described or approximately the length of the forearm, a yard
from the tip of the fingers to the nose on an outstretched arm or a 'pace',
a fathom (6 ft) the distance between outstretched fingertips etc. Perhaps
when they start making metric people the 'new ideas' will catch on
universally ;o)
