There's a tool commonly called an 'ind-i-col' that fits around the
spindle nose, and has several swivel joints to hold an indicator
at various angles. When the arms are extended, it allows the
indicator to sweep around in a circle. There are many other ways
of doing this.

But, the first thing is to have a good reference surface. I usually
take an end mill and mill the surface flat. This makes the surface
parallel to the XY plane of motion. I have a program that cuts a
circular groove in a test block, and then returns to the center of the
circular groove, ready to mount the indicator and sweep the circle.

As for how to make the actual adjustments, that depends on the
particulr machine.

Shim stock is available from all the machine tool disrtibutors.
