There is a good book PROGRAMMING AND CUSTOMIZING PICmicro
MICROCONTROLLERS, by Myke Predko.
Pubilshed by McGraw-Hill, ISBN 0-07-136172-3
The second edition of this book, which I bought about 2 months ago,
includes both a CDROM and a PC board bound into it. It is at least twice
as thick as the first edition. The CD has all the code for the various
software tools needed to program the PICs. The PC board needs a few
cheap parts soldered on and it is a programmer.
A good book, very detailed, has many example projects in it.
Obviously written with the cooperation of the company because every
single time the word PICmicro is used it is followed by the (R)
registered trademark character- even on the damn front cover of the
book. There must be about a half million of them in the book, at least a
dozen to each page.
The list price for the book is US$49.95. I bought mine in a local store,
I assume amazon sells it. Be sure you get the second edition, I have
seen stores with the First edition still on the shelf.

PS, no I have not done anything usefull with it yet, but its on my list
to do 'real soon now'
