I had to take the head off mine too - to get it into the basement. I bolted
the base onto the stand and tipped it over so it layed horizontal on the
floor and put the head on. Moved the head all the way down to lower the C
of G and With two people was able to tip it back up.

I'm going to have the same problem. My stand has a door in it and I think
if I cut an opening in the top of the stand - under the base, it might give
easier access to the Y screw and nut.
