Hi all, this is for Elliot Burke,
To wind a transformer secondary in a welded laminate frame may not be so
bad. It depends on what voltage you want to have the secondary deliver.
Try one or two turns with a suitable length piece of wire and connect the
primary to a 120v outlet (AC of course) and measure the voltage on the
secondary. From that you can get the "turns per volt" figure you need.
Then, if you only need say 3 volts on the secondary, that figure divided by
the "volts per turn" will give you the number of turns to add. If your
secondary voltage is to be fairly low, you may be in luck and only have to
feed a small number of turns through that closed frame. People hand wind
toroid transformers all the time. Your problem is no different. On the
other hand, If you need 5000 volts, you have a problem and I would suggest
you buy a factory build.
Henry
