I have also turned the McMaster ballscrews (to be used on a hobby
non-commercial machine) on my hobby oriented Shoptask 3 in 1 machine. I used
a lowend Harbor Freight 1/2" shank insert tool bit with some off brand
triangular insets I got from Enco. Speed was about 300 rpm and feed was a
politically correct home hobby rate of 1 ipm (ok, the rapid returns were at
120 ipm ;`) ). Depth of cut for the initial cut was all the way down to
under the skin on the thread roots. Lube was a little WD-40 sprayed as it
cut (lots of smoke!). I broke a number of inserts (is it ok to talk about
using inserts in a home shop or is that not politically correct?) until I
learned that you need to cut the whole hardened thread in one pass. Lots of
vibration and noise, but the job was done.
