We used the AN2131DK development kit, and at least for the
time being we are using the AN2131 chip on the test platform
that we designed. We have also used this chip in some streaming
data devices we designed. Simpler versions of the chip might get
used on any dedicated devices built in the future.

The Xilinx chip contains a hardware pulse generator for running
stepper motors. It provides high resolution, smooth pulse trains
for up to 4 axis while also managing coordinated acceleration and
deceleration ramps.

The Cypress development kit is quite good. They supply examples
that run right out of the box. Source code is provided, so
you can just start hacking at it to evolve into your custom
device. You do need to register for your own USB ID code
before selling to the general public so that systems can
autoconfigure correctly.

Cypress supplies both the driver for the PC side (under
Windows 98/ME) and the AN2131 side. Additionally they also
provide a GUI application on the PC to aid with sending
and receiving simple packets for debug. I am not the
programmer on this, Bob who is doing the software has been
pretty happy with it. The fun really begins when you start
trying to do things differently from the code samples.
