RE: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] A little bit of help; Always works!!!

Anthony:

I can start the list of items, and others can fill in and comment.

1. The actual machine tool (lathe, mill, combo unit)
2. CNC mounting hardware to allow exchange of handwheels for motors
3. Stepper or servo motors.
4. Stepper or servo motor driver
5. Power supply
6. Possibly "black box" to interface RS-232 to Step/Direction motor
controller
7. Desktop computer with either parallel or serial ports. Often, you can use
printer port instead of parallel port
8. Software: G-Code interpreter to provide step and direction pulses to
Parallel port
9. Software: DXF to G-Code Converter Software.
10. Software: CAD program to generate DXF. I use Intellicad 2000 available
for free at www.cadopia.com

If you become fluent in writing your own G-Code, you can eliminate items #9
and #10. However, you probably want to use a good CAD program any way.

I think that the guys who suggest that you determine the size of the parts
you want to built and then choose your machines accordingly is fundamentally
sound. Of course, you must also consider where you're going to put that
equipment and how much money you have to spend on it. What sorts of things
do you have planned?

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your trip to the Cleveland area. Did you fly
directly to Cleveland via Continental, or through New York, Cincinnati, or
Atlanta? Strongsville is about seven miles south of Cleveland's airport.

I know this might sound silly but I am even more confused!? What do I need
apart from a machine to retro fit and make a CNC machine which I can run
from one of my computers?? Any one got a shopping list? Step by step?
Suppliers for components in the UK??

Thanks for all the help
Anthony
