There is a book that machine tool dealers have that list serial # ranges
for each year of manufacture.

I will get a scratch anywhere I leave the boring tool. This is what I do.
I turn the boring tool until it is pointing away from me, and then apply
about 50 Lbs of pull on the boring head (toward me) as I retract it. That
is enough to deflect it safely away from the wall.
