DC Surplus Motors

I rebuilt my 16 inch bench top drill press with the 90-130VDC 2.5HP
treadmill motor from Surplus Sales ($49.95 plus shipping, came to $62.00
total), and it is superior in all respects to the original motor/drive
system that was on my 'press. Now when you turn the power off, the quill
stops, right now, within 1 or 2 revolutions. With the variable speed I never
have to worry about burning a bit by rotating it too fast (my effective
speed runs from 30 to 3200 RPM), and with the addition of a cooling fan and
fresh air duct around the motor and power supply, I can use it at 100% power
for unlimited lengths of time. I installed an electronic bicycle computer
system on the quill and it displays RPM times 10 which shows that the motor
is very stable in its' speed, once you set the speed with the pot, the motor
stays where you set it with no variation or "hunting". With the variable
speed and reversing feature of the motor, tapping is now possible with the
drill press. The motor and drive system is extremely smooth and even. I
can't recommend the Surplus Sales motor-power supply system enough.

If anyone is interested in conversion pictures, please send me an email
off-list, and I will attach them to a reply to you.
