Hi, well i will give you my best having worked in an alternator/starter shop
for 12 years. I have seen generators and dc. motors which were made in the
1930's and worked a long time before service. several things come into play
here....1st if the original work to the commutator(part brush rides on)
has been done with care brushes should last many years. if the commutator is
out of round,or the undercut(space between commutators) is not done with
care,or if the finnish of the commutator is no smooth then brushes wont last
very long. i have taken dc motors apart that the commutator was worn out
from use and repair, but the tach generator barely looked worn. another
example, i bought the 3 motors from a D+D screw machine that had run for 5
years/seven days a week with a helper chuck over the 5c collet driven by a 7
1/2 horsepower spindle motor. No one ever babied that machine,i even
punnished it with heavy cuts myself. i opened the 3 motors up and all 3 both
tach and motor brush assemblies still look new! commutator/brush assy's
usually dont care about a glitch on the line but a brushless motor might
have it's electronics damaged......my opinion. cul brian f.
