Weyland,
Some of the motor sizing issue for plasma will simply come down to the "mass"
of the moving parts. If you have a real heavy gantry, it will take more to
move it fast. Gearing obviously comes into play as well. I have built one
with some little 80oz motors and she'll safely pull the gantry at speeds up
to 400ipm. I was a bit suprised the first time I ran it! It uses Rack and
pinion.

I could take a look at what my final drive ratios ended up to be if you'd
like. Knowing that much can save a lot of time.
