Greetings,
I believe in belts and braces, but I got bit by the Sir 32 virus,
because it sent a file from a friend and I had no reason to suspect
him...so I opened it. McAfee didn't catch it (and I had updated the
virus data file just a few days before). So every program I tried to
start failed and came up with a warning dialogue which advised me that
Sir32cam.exe was missing.
Fortunately I use NT and run two drives...the second is a Norton Ghost
cloned copy of the first and after I do the cloning, I turn the drive
off (I use removeable drive bays).
So I swapped drives, went looking on the net, found out about the
virus. Couldn't get thru to McAfee, so needing a few other goodies,
went to Fry's and bought Norton Anti-Virus which updates in the
background anytime you are on the internet.
Installed it, updated it. Turned on the second drive (which was my
original drive), had Norton scan it. It found the virus, but could only
quarantine it. So, using Ghost I copyied my data partition from my
previous primary drive to my current primary drive and then cloned them
as I normally would have.
Sorry for the long post, BUT...having learned a year ago that there is
nothing like losing all of your data because of a deadly virus. In this
case I have recovered from a malicious virus (not a deadly one) in a
matter of a couple of hours with no lost data. Had it been deadly and
wiped out everything, I would have lost a days worth of work.
This what I have done to avoid the problems of getting a virus: Two
harddrives in removeable drive bays, that I clone using Norton Ghost
every few days (after cloning, I turn the backup drive off so it is
unavailable). Using NT4 w/SP6 is also an advantage, because it is stable
and remapping drive letters works very well. I keep ALL data on one
partition, and I clone that partition using Norton Ghost every day (to
the backup drive) as well as burning it onto a CD-RW disc every day.
If I am working on something important, I will burn the data onto the
CD-RW disc periodically during the day.
I feel that the pain and loss I have experienced in the past from virus
attacks has been minimized as far as is reasonable. The only thing I
wish I could do is automate the cloning and burning data to the CD,
because I do forget now and then (old brain):)
