Have a look at a little free program called Scanmail
http://www.kempston.demon.co.uk/smb/
http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~kempston/smb/

This allows you to see what is on your server before you download any
thing. You can spot spam and just click and delete it before you
download. Also enables you to spot big binaries waiting so you have a
choice when to dowload depending on time or speed.
You can also just read the odd email by double clicking on it and not
haveing to down load the whole lot just to read one post. This
doesn't delete it at all.
