If you are buying all-new hardware, of a medium to large size, like 1 HP
continuous or bigger, then a flux-vector drive may be quite cost effective,
compared to a complete, turnkey DC-brushless SYSTEM (motor, encoders,
drive, power supply, etc.). If you are picking up pieces surplus, a motor
here, an encoder there, then NO WAY! A DC brush servo amp can be
had for a few hundred dollars from several vendors, or surplus for next to
nothing, if you know the items better than the surplus dealer. DC brush
servo motors can be had for anywhere from 'cart-em-away' to $50-75.
The 'standard, off-the-shelf' used to mean DC-brush, but no longer.
Most manufacturers are using DC-brushless or flux-vector, but they're
not selling them cheap.
