OK, here's another idea. The G340 is small enough to mount on a sink next
to the motor, which will be fan cooled. The S/D inputs are optoisolated.
Why not run the S/D lines from the breakout board along with the power
supply lines all the way to the motor? The encoder lines would then be just
a few inches long.
There is at least one step motor on the market with a built-in amplifier.
Perhaps the S/D lines are good for 15 feet if shielded.
