I am not sure exactly how it is utilized, but there are switches available.
If I remember right they are Gray code, and put out pulses that are measured
by software, that can be programmed to read in fractions of a degre.
We had a new machine just before I retired that used that method in
packaging buns.
You have now came to the end of my knowledge on that subject.
