Roland,

what kind of resolution are you looking for? 4 bit 8,12?

a 4 bit absolute encoder wouldn't be hard to scratch build
but it starts to get cramped at higher counts
maybe use copper foil on a glass/plastic plate and etch it like a PCB

does it need to have continuous rotation or would a single turn
device work?
say a potentiometer + A/d converter or MCU with A/D
perhaps a geared down single or multi turn unit ,or remove the stops
from a single turn pot
