Download a copy of StlTrans. The help file has detailed information about how to find
and use DEM data with StlTrans. StlTrans automatically creates 3D topographic maps that
are machinable. They can also be scaled any way that you would like. There is a screen
shot of a section of the Grand Canyon (that I made with 10X scaling in Z), on our web site.

StlTrans has all the features you need to create this kind of form. Save it as an STL file
and StlWork will machine the contour for you.
Most of the low cost 3D solid modelers have a "height field" function that will create
a 3D contour from a DEM. A Digital Elevation Model is a binary bitmapped image that has
the colors chosen( "mapped") to correspond to the elevation of the landscape. StlTrans automatically
interacts with those used by the USGS to create the 3D contour. Most of the world is
available on-line for a free download. There are several scales available.
