Excerpt from the StlTrans help file:

The USGS can be found on the World Wide Web at
http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/. Files are available that contain the map
data and also descriptions of the data contained in the files.


1-degree DEM Files

One of the supported maps is the 1-degree DEM (Digital Elevation
Model) map. The 1-degree DEM is also known as 3-arc second DEM or
1:250,000 scale DEM. An array of elevations are stored in the file
at a regular spaced interval of 90 meters.


A little bit of info to get you going. (Look under the mapping home
page link). I guarantee that there is more about elevation maps than
you will want to know. ;-)
