Guys,
Have spent a good piece of time digging in the archives, and am
wondering if a consensus was ever reached on a good home-brew probe?

In the bigger view, $1000.00 is not overly excessive, but as a hobbyist
user, it is definitely out of the budget. (Or so the wife says!<vbg>)
