This is not going to be a simple project.

The basic working parameter is ampere-turns. Ie, 10 turns of wire
with 2 amps flowing is the same as 2 turns of wire with 10 amps
flowing. Only count the turns in the part of the winding that will be
on at any given time. You probably want a lower turn count to keep
the inductance down, but don't let the current get higher than the
capability of the driver you plan to use. Don't worry about the
voltage so much... a chopper driver is a current regulator and will
adjust the voltage as needed.

When you pull the rotor out, you must slide in an iron core that is a
tight fit in the surrounding magnet to maintain its strength. Don't
hammer on any components or you can weaken the magnet. Don't chip it.
Don't get any contaminents in there - the running clearences are tiny.
And oh yeah, put it back together perfectly aligned.

Have fun... in theory it *is* possible.

I'm off to try running some slow-syns with a non-chopping unipolar
drive to generate miniscule feedrates. Step frequency will be below
60hz... I expect the torque penalty will be minimul.
