The parallel port is better at sinking current than sourcing it. Just
read a write-up on why it is so and while it is too much to get into
here in detail the concept is sound. So, by using the +5V as the common
the connection to the parallel port is now sinking the current. While it
probably would not make a difference in the real world it is technically
a better arrangement.
