driven? If you are using screws you get a lot of reduction and the motors
can be smaller to handle the cutting loads than if you are using rack and
pinion or direct belt drive (like on many printers).

this just a budgetary constraint? I have built some of my own controllers
using the L297/298 chip sets and when it was done and said I probably had
$35 per axis in hard costs and I made my own board. If you add a commercial
board for about $20 or so a piece you are now at $55 per axis. I can sell
you a closeout original version Gecko G201 for not much more than that and
it will work right of the bat and you will not be limited to the 2 amps a
L297/298 setup is.
