I would point out the yahoogroups is based on the idea of a list
server. This was a program (listserv, majordomo, mailman) which ran
on a machine typically at a university somewhere and allowed people to
subscribe to a list via emailing commands. Such existed long before
yahoo, even before the web was invented and the internet was mostly
about email and ftp. Onelist (which yahoo bought) simply added a bit
of a web interface and tried to make money by putting adds at the
bottom of the messages.

Should yahoo become unusuable, I would be willing to help setup a
computer to serve this and perhaps several other related lists, and
I'm sure I would not be the only such volunteer amongst our
membership. Those of us who remember the pre-commercial internet use
things like yahoo with a degree of amusement, and stand ready to go
back to the old ways if the dot-com bubble completely bursts. I known
that mailman (which is free software) now offers a web interface, and
it may be that majordomo does as well.
