Standards, who needs them?.....

With all the talk of RS274 versus RS274 NIST, I'm left with the
question, who cares?

For discussion:

What purpose do the Gcode standards serve?

Why would a manufacturer want to adhere to standards?

Are standards more for the market leaders or losers?

Should a user/purchaser be concerned whether his machine conforms to
a certain set of standards?
